The Basic Requirements for Crane Maintenance and Inspection

Cranes are used in varied industries to handle heavy objects. In order to move oversized objects safely, you need to be assured about the periodic crane inspection. There are lots of regulatory authorities in the industry that control crane safety through general requirements, design, inspection, and maintenance operations.

General Inspection Requirements

It is expected to have routine inspections to ensure continued and safer operation of cranes that are used for large and heavy objects. An initial inspection is required prior to use of a new or altered crane. The items that are inspected during the initial inspection are hoisting, trolley, bridge, limit switches, trip setting and load test.

There are two types of inspections that need to be done once a crane is placed into service.

  • Frequent inspections: These can be done between daily to monthly intervals to examine any critical component in a crane. The operating mechanism and any leakage in the pneumatic or hydraulic parts can be checked with frequent inspections.
  • Periodic inspections: These inspections are usually done at a monthly or yearly interval. The purpose of periodic crane inspection is to determine deterioration or malfunction of any part of the crane due to wear.  Any loose or deformed rivets, members, and distorted parts can be checked with a periodic inspection.

Maintenance Requirements

It is always better to invest in a crane manufactured by a reliable entity. According to their recommendation, a preventive maintenance program can be implemented to ensure longer life of the cranes. During maintenance programs deteriorated components or unsafe conditions can be detected.

  • Only designated person can perform the repairs.
  • As per occupational safety standards, the control of hazardous energy should be used to de-energize the crane.
  • The operators must be trained with skills and knowledge via the Operator Competency training to be a safe operator.

With the help of regular inspections and well-versed operators, it is easy to identify common hazards in the operations environment, and you can also save a lot of money on damage control. The highly trained and certified experts at Dutest are rendering inspection, testing, and certification work on all lifting equipment including cranes; you can rely on the knowledge of their engineers to ensure a longer lifespan of your cranes.
